Kangaroo Cultural Tours

This educational experience details the songlines and cultural heritage associated with the kangaroo on Awabakal Country. Participants explore:

• Traditional customs and cultural practices
• Linguistic history and key language terms
• Traditional hunting practices and tools
• Daily life and responsibilities on Country
• The role of the kangaroo in ceremony, art and storytelling
• The spiritual relationship between people, animals and the land

Local Aboriginal Cultural & Heritage Sites and landscapes

This tour provides a detailed overview of significant Aboriginal cultural and heritage sites within the local area. Participants are introduced to:

• The historical use and ongoing cultural importance of key sites
• Protocols and guidelines for respectful visitation
• Key stories and language terms connected to each place
• Community perspectives on how sites are linked through songlines, law and kinship
• Contemporary challenges to protecting cultural heritage
• The shared responsibilities of visitors, organisations and government in supporting the care of Country

Bush Tucker and Bush Medicine

This tour examines the traditional use of native plants for food, medicine and daily living. It outlines how knowledge of bush tucker and bush medicine has been developed, maintained and passed between generations, and the cultural protocols that guide its use today.

Participants are introduced to key plant species, their properties and appropriate harvesting practices, with an emphasis on caring for Country and respecting cultural intellectual property. Participants are introduced to:

• The role of native plants in traditional diets and seasonal living
• Common bush medicine plants and their traditional applications
• Cultural protocols for harvesting, preparing and sharing plant resources
• The importance of intergenerational knowledge transfer
• Contemporary issues affecting native plants and cultural knowledge, including land use and climate impacts.

A minimum of 10 people are required for a private tour.

What to Expect

Prepare for an immersive cultural experience as we walk together on Awabakal Country. Our tours involve mindful journeys through significant landscapes, where you will learn about ancient stone arrangements, native bush tucker, and the deep spiritual connection our community holds with the land. We suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes, a sun hat, and bringing plenty of water. Through shared stories and first-hand observation, you will gain a profound understanding of the living heritage that defines the Biraban area.
