OUR HISTORY

Biraban Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) was established in 1984, following the historic passage of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 (NSW). Our mission has always been to represent the residents within our boundaries, ensuring the protection of Aboriginal culture, heritage, and the management of our sacred lands across the Lake Macquarie region.

The council is named in honor of Biraban, the legendary Awabakal leader, scholar, and diplomat who was pivotal in the early 19th century. Biraban was renowned for his efforts in preserving the Awabakal language and culture, and the legacy of bridging communities while maintaining cultural integrity remains our guiding principle today.

Over the past four decades, Biraban LALC has grown into a vital pillar of the community, evolving to meet the changing needs of our members. From securing traditional land titles to developing robust community stewardship programs, our history is a narrative of resilience, community strength, and an unbreakable connection to Country.
